Gender Roles

The role of gender and its attributes seems to generally come up in Disney movies. One such example is the movie Mulan in which we see a switch in gender roles as Mulan goes in place of her father as a soldier for the Chinese army. She finds herself unable to fulfill the female role of providing honor for her family by being married off to the right male suitor. She does not know how to wear the traditional garb or make-up etc. of a Chinese woman and so she fails to be able to fulfill her female role, but when she makes the switch to be the "son" of her family, she struggles but in the end is victorious. In this particular clip men are supposed to be "tranquil as a forest, but a fire within" which I think means that they must be centered and calm while at the same time strong, cunning, handsome, aggressive, hunters and warriors. They start out as "spineless and without a clue" but in the end are able to "Be a Man" as the song suggests.
