Gender Differences: Suicide attempts less likely in men with higher IQ's

The study, which I found on CNN.com, demonstrates that men with higher IQs are less likely to commit suicide. This research coincides with what we learned yesterday: that women are more likely to attempt suicide, but men are more likely to actually carry out the suicide attempt. To complete the study, researchers followed 1.1 million military recruits(all men) in Sweden. It was found that attempted suicide rate rose steadily as IQ scores dropped. The following explanations may explain these results:
* IQ may influence coping skills
* Higher IQ may be associated with a larger social network for better release of stress (and better access to a health professional)
* Men with higher IQ's may come up with better solutions to their problems
* Genes could be at work too

It is important to note, however, that the study does not apply to women or older men.
