Aggression

The following video ties into the aggression lecture.
It is an interesting example of Instrumental and hostile aggression that take place from two perspectives during World cup 2006.
Materazzi the Italian player (blue) initiates the altercation by apparently provoking Zidane of France (white) by insulting Zidane's mother and Algerian ancestry. Verbal insults are very much a part of soccer ( I have experienced this on many occasions on the field as a soccer player). Additionally Zidane is the star soccer player of France and he had lead France to a World cup title in 1998.

Thus, Materazzi engages in mental and verbal aggression which fall under Instrumental aggression- Materazzi has the goal of helping his team win in mind as he wants to make Zidane lose focus so he can't play well.
Zidane on the other hand reacts by engaging in physical aggression (head butt) which is solely hostile since he only wants to hurt Materazzi without any goal of personal gain.
Materazzi succeeded in attaining his goal via Instrumental aggression as this head butt got Zidane a red card that ejected him out of the game and caused France to lose its star, leader and ultimately the world cup.
Zidane achieved the motive of hurting Materazzi via Hostile aggression.
